Commencement Instructions

  1. PHOTOGRAPHS – A professional photographer will photograph each candidate as the diploma is received from the President, and after each graduate exits the stage. Proofs will be emailed to each student at the email address they provide GWU. Students may place orders from any of those professional proofs. The photographer is in partnership with Gardner-Webb University and will work directly with each student.   2. COMMENCEMENT – The commencement ceremony schedule:

    Saturday, December 314 2019 - 10:00 a.m. for all programs in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center


    8:30 a.m. in the Dover Theatre located within the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center

    PLEASE BE PROMPT. Once you are in the line, DO NOT leave your assigned place. There is a chance that your diploma may be withdrawn from the ceremony if you are not in place prior to the final attendance check. Any changes made to the assembly of graduates will be emailed to each graduate via their Gardner-Webb email address.

  4. ACADEMIC ATTIREYou will need to order your cap and gown online. Expenses related to academic regalia are the responsibility of the student.

  5. CAPS – Caps should be level, not tilted to either side or back. All undergraduate candidates wear the tassel on the right front quadrant of the cap. You will be instructed to move your tassel to the left after you all have received your diplomas.

    • Women wear caps throughout the entire service. Men wear caps to their seats, and then remove them at the beginning of the invocation. Keep caps off except while receiving degrees. Men remove caps for all prayers.

  1. GOWNS – Dark clothing should be worn with the regalia. Women should wear dark dresses or pants and dark shoes. Men should wear dark pants, dark shoes and dark socks; white shirts and dark neckties.

  2. SHOES - Women may want to consider comfortable shoes as the graduates will be led across campus, weather permitting.

  3. LINE OF MARCH - The marshals will place you in line and indicate for you the route to be followed. Watch your marshals and follow their directions. Once inside the arena, keep together in pairs with the distance constant between you.

  4. GUESTS - There is no limit to the number of guests you may invite to attend.
